Tonello signs 'Divided We Fail' pledge
John Tonello, Democratic candidate for the 53rd State Senate seat, announced today that he has signed the AARP's "Divided We Fail" pledge that calls for bipartisan efforts to ensure New Yorkers and all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care.
Tonello said committing to the pledge was easy because it demands reasonable action that follows common sense.
"Nearly 2.5 million New Yorkers are without health care," Tonello said. "Millions are living in fear of losing their jobs, their homes, or their savings with the onset of illness or injury. That's unacceptable. We must work together -- government, employers and employees -- to increase access to health care and reduce its costs by focusing on prevention, not costly emergency room care. By signing this pledge, I'm reaffirming my commitment to do just that."
The pledge says that Tonello is "committed to working with my colleagues across the aisle to develop and implement policies that provide all New Yorkers with access to quality, affordable health care and lifetime financial security. I understand that New Yorkers want answers, action and accountability from their elected officials -- not legislative stalemate."
The pledge calls for promoting policies that prevent illness, improve education for health-care consumers, develop information technology for better managing health records, and choice when it comes to long-term care options.
